A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
